When shots don’t turn into goals

Marc Guillén

The stats are clear –Barça are getting more shots in this season, but scoring less then ever.

“We’re playing better than in my first year” according to Guardiola and a glance at the shooting stats seem to support that view, with the team getting more attempts than ever in so far this season, but unfortunately not converting their opportunities into goals.

Two less than against Panathinaikos

In the Mallorca game , Barça’s single goal came from 26 attempts – just two less than against Panathinaikos, when they scored five times. Guardiola’s team clearly showed their attacking prowess against Mallorca, it was just that they couldn’t transform that into goals.

Fewer shots against Racing

2010-08-29_PARTIDO_03.JPGThe win against Racing on the opening day of the season came after just 10 shots – nearly a third of the number against Mallorca, but three of those resulted in goals as the team cruised to a 0-3 win.

More goal attempts

So far this season, Barça are averaging 18.75 attempts on goal per game, compared to 15.6 last year and 17 the season before, a stat that should calm any Barça fan’s nerves –the team are making the chances and the goals are sure to follow!
