Xavi with tendon trouble

www.fcbarcelona.cat

The midfielder has been suffering bother for several weeks, and for that reason, has been left out of the Spain squad.

According to the Medical Services “For several weeks, the player has been suffering bilateral aquiline tendinopathy, which has reached an acute stage. The player, the manager Pep Guardiola, the FC Barcelona Medical Services and national manager Vicente del Bosque have decided that the best decision would be for him not to play with the Spanish national team in the games against Lithuania and Scotland in order for him to remain in Barcelona and do recovery work.

Tomorrow, in consideration of the player’s condition, we will decide whether Xavi Hernández will also miss the game against Mallorca next Sunday."

Draw and Messi’s return in numbers

www.fcbarcelona.cat

Barça salvaged a point from the ever-difficult trip to Rubin Kazan. Villa scored his first penalty for Barça, and Leo Messi returned from injury among the many positives to take from the game.

- Barça’s total dominance was reflected by their 79% possession of the ball.

- The visitors made 824 passes, compared to the home side’s 218.

- Barça wore green in the Centralny Stadium, and shot more than twice as much as their opponents (16 to 7). They also took 10 corners, compared to two for the Tartars. Both sides hit the post once.

2010-09-29_LLEGADA_KAZAN_02.JPG- Javier Mascherano started his second game, playing 60 minutes just in front of the defence. 73 of his 77 passes were good) and he topped the team in recoveries, winning 10 balls.

- Rubin Kazan still have yet to lose to Barça, with two draws and a win in three meetings.

- Villa scored his first penalty for his new club. He was the regular taker for Zaragoza, Sporting and also for Spain.

- This goal was the 400th for FCB in Europe’s premier club competition.

- Ten days after getting injured at Atletico Madrid, Leo Messi came on for the last 34 minutes. He had time to make four shots, 25 passes, four dribbles and to be fouled twice.

Messi to receive Golden Boot

Edgar Fornós

Leo Messi’s 34 league goals last season were enough to win him the award for topping the European club goalscoring charts. He will collect the trophy this afternoon at the Estrella Damm factory in Barcelona.

This is the first time the world’s greatest player has won this accolade. He won by scoring five more times than the players that ended joint second, Chelsea’s Didier Drogba and Udinese’s Antonio Di Natale, both with 29.

Record breaking campaign
The 2009/10 season was Messi’s fifth as a pro, and in it he produced an extraordinary 34 league goals. He had previously scored 23 in 2008/09, while his first three seasons pale in comparison: 6 (05/06), 14 (06/07) and 10 (07/08).

Yet more prestigious silverware
2010-09-23_BOTA_DE_ORO_MESSI_EN_MUSEU_FCB_007.jpgThe Golden Boot is just the latest major honour to be won by Leo Messi. He has already won the FIFA World Player and the Balon d’Or, which is sufficient recognition of his place as the best player in the world – he has won the three most important individual awards in the world. The original trophy will now go on display in the FC Barcelona Museum for the next week.

Xavi not selected by Del Bosque

www.fcbarcelona.cat

Xavi Hernàndez has not been named in Vicente del Bosque Spain team for European Championship games against Lithuania and Scotland. The FC Barcelona World Cup players were all included.

The Barça players in the 20-man squad are Valdés, Piqué, Puyol, Busquets, Iniesta, Pedro and Villa, who will play Euro 2012 qualifying matches against Lithuania in Salamanca on October 8, and then against Scotland in Glasgow four days later.

Puyol back
Other than Xavi being left out, the other big news is that Carles Puyol returns, after missing the trip to Argentina for a friendly due to a leg injury. That injury also meant he missed the opening league game of the season against Santander.

Villa and Alves happy with a draw

Anna Segura

David Villa and Dani Alves admitted after FC Barcelona’s 1-1 draw against Rubin in Kazan on Wednesday that taking a point from the game was a bad result given the circumstances.

The Blaugrana duo felt that the team should not be disappointed with the outcome despite dominating possession throughout the encounter. On the half-hour mark Rubin broke away and took the lead from the penalty spot and Barça then took advantage of a foul in the area when Andrés Iniesta was fouled to draw level through Villa.

Content feeling
2010-09-29_PARTIDO_22.JPGRubin employed six defenders and made life very difficult for Barça and for that reason Alves was not dismayed not to have won. “Given the circumstances of the game we go away feeling content,” the Brazilian said. “As a team they have played very well defensively. They had a line of five behind a line of four. We could not find much space and that cost us. We should have read the game better.”

Spot kick

Villa agreed with his team-mate: “They defend very well and they closed up the space very well,” he commented. “It was very hard for us to penetrate between the two back lines. Then the penalty made things even more complicated for us. If we had taken one of our early chances then things would have been different.”

Guardiola: "We did everything to win"

Roger Bogunyà

Josep Guardiola felt that his FC Barcelona side did enough to claim all three points from their Champions League encounter in Kazan after having to settle for a 1-1 draw against Rubin.

“The team attacked well and did everything to win,” he said. “I am pleased with the players. We did nothing wrong and only needed to just put one of our chances away. I felt that we created enough opportunities to win.”

Defensive outlook
Rubin and Barça both scored from the penalti spot and Guardiola felt that his team found it difficult against a side that played with six defenders. “They played well defensively,” he added.

Chelsea and Inter
2010-09-29_PARTIDO_28.JPG“The Blaugrana boss did lament the fact that his team did not take the lead at any point in the game."With these types of teams going in front can be a little advantage," he explained. Barça also drew in Kazan last season in a game that also saw them create enough chances to win.

Rubin's stance reminded Guardiola of the approach of opponents such as Chelsea and Inter in the last two Champions League semi finals that Barça played in as the defensive systems were set up to stifle his team.

Two scores to settle

Roger Bogunyà

Kazan will be the venue tonight (18.30, GolT) for a repeat of one of the season’s Champions League duels. Barça, with doubts over Messi, are looking to get their second European win against a Rubin side that they failed to beat last time.
But morale is high after four consecutive wins against Panathinaikos, Atletico Madrid, Sporting and Bilbao. FC Barcelona are once again producing the kind of form that has brought them eight trophies in just two seasons. They also know how to learn from their mistakes. A year ago they lost at the Calderón and drew at San Mamés, but they have recently won games at those previously traumatic venues. Now it’s time to settle their score with Rubin Kazan.

One out of six a year ago
2009-11-04_WEB_02.JPGThe Tartar side stunned FCB in both meetings in the last edition of the Champions League. At the Camp Nou they won 2-1, and then held the defending champions to a 0-0 draw at the Centralny in Kazan. That was five points FC Barcelona dropped against the Russian League outfit, making them the only side other than Chelsea that Barça have not beaten in teo meetings under Guardiola. But now it’s time to change history, as has already been done against Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao.

Questions about Messi

2010-09-28_ENTRENO_14.JPGThe other big talking point ahead of the crunch encounter is over striker Leo Messi. The Argentinian has been out for ten days since being on the receiving end of a Ujfalusi tackle and has yet to be declared fully fit. But he has been training normally and clearly wants to play, although such an immediate return to action may be a risky move. At least the weather is more favourable this year in Kazan, and that’s good news if he is named in the team.

Rubin Kazan in need
Rubin Kazan are in need of points after losing to Copenhagen in their opening match. Two of last year’s stars have since left the club, ‘Chori’ Domínguez and Semak, but they have been well replaced by the likes of Martins and Carlos Eduardo. But they will know that if they fail to get any points out of this game, then their second round options will be very limited indeed. To avoid defeat to Barça for the third time would be excellent news for Rubin Kazan.

Rubin Kazan v Barça: Did you know...

www.fcbarcelona.cat

Two familiar foes meet again this evening. Here is a selection of trivia associated to the second game in the Champions League group stage.

►Rubin and Barça are sharing a group for the second year in a row. In Kazan they drew 0-0.

► As many as nine of the team that started a year ago could be playing again tonight. Only Touré and Ibrahimovic have moved on.

► Last November’s game in Kazan was the 200th for Barça in Europe’s premier club competition.

► Barça have never lost in Russia, where they have won once and drawn four times.

► If Sergio Busquets plays, it will be 100th first team appearance for FCB.

► FC Barcelona are just one goal from their 400th in the European Cup. Will it be scored today?

► Rubin Kazan are currently four points adrift of Russian League leaders Zenit.

► The Tartar side made eight summer signings, including Carlos Eduardo (Hoffenheim), Martins (Wolfsburg) and Bocchetti (Genoa).

► Apart from last year’s game, which was also played at 18.30 CET, the last game Barça played an early fixture like this was in 2003 at FKM Púchov (1-1) in the UEFA Cup. It kicked off at 19.00 CET.

Wet training features Messi

Marc Guillén / Anna Segura

Leo Messi was the focus of all attention in the only Barça training session in Kazan, which took place under intense rain.

After arriving in Kazan on Monday night, the players trained this evening at the Centralny Stadium, the place where they drew with Rubin a year ago. But rather than the intense cold of their first visit to Tartarstan, this time it was rain that had to deal with.

Messi takes part
2010-09-28_ENTRENO_14.JPGGuardiola’s charges were able to test a pitch in near-perfect condition. Messi, who has yet to be given medical clearance, seemed able to train perfectly normally. He was all smiles during the only 15 minutes of the session that were open to the media.

Change of turf
2010-09-28_ENTRENO_20.JPGLast season, this same pitch was lost under a blanket of snow and the grass was taller than what the Barça players are used to. But this year there can be no complaints about the surface. The new turf in the Centralny impressed everybody, and should ebenfit the Catalan’s famous passing style.

Villa gets one-match ban

www.fcbarcelona.cat

David Villa, who was shown a red card on Saturday at the San Mamés, has been issued a one-match suspension.

The Comitè de Competició has penalised Villa for his tussle with Gurpegui during the match with Athletic Bilbao. This means the Asturian will be absent for the Liga match next Sunday against Mallorca at the Camp Nou (19.00).

Second missed match
David Villa has played in every one of Barça’s official matches this season apart from the first leg of the Spanish Super cup in Seville, when he had only just got back from his holidays. He has played in seven games, five in the league, one in Europe and one in the Supercup.

Pep predicts tough game

Jordi Clos

Barça manager Pep Guardiola expects as touch a game with Rubin Kazan as they had last year, but refused to reveal whether Messi would be playing.

On the eve of their Champions League meeting, Pep Guardiola had nothing but praise for their opponents, Rubin Kazan. He expects a “terribly tough match” comparable to the ones they played last season. “Those game showed us what a good team they are. They took five out 6 points away from us, they are that good. I have seen very few teams that can defend so well”.

Familiar foe
2010-09-28_ENTRENO_05.JPGAfter the Tartars did so well in the previous Champions League, almost qualifying for the second phase, Guardiola expects “it to be very similar to last season … it’s the same structure, with a few changes, as we saw in Copenhagen. Although they’ve lost ‘Chori’ Domínguez, they have signed some top quality players”. He added that better attacking is the key to getting better results against the Russian League club.

Incognito

2010-09-28_ENTRENO_01.JPGOf course, he was pressed for clues regarding Lionel Messi. “First we’ll have to look at Leo’s ankle. He’ll train, and then we’ll speak to him and the doctors and then we’ll decide. It’s a very important match, bit his fitness is what matters most.” The Argentinian was able to train with his colleagues once again today in the Centralny Stadium.

Impressed with team

Guardiola is generally optimistic about what he has seen his team do so far. “You always have to be careful. But I’m feeling nicely confident … the recent spirit shows that the players are assimilating new and old concepts … I think we’ll have a good year. The symptoms are good”.

Goals from all quarters

Sandra Sarmiento

Nine different players have scored the 21 goals scored by the first team in their 8 official matches played to date. Messi, with 7, is the top scorer.

Barça can rely on players to score in all departments, not just the strikers. Midfielders and even defenders have been getting on the scoresheet in Guardiola’s squad.

Messi, Villa and Pedro get 50%

2010-09-14_PARTIDO_02.JPGWhat a trio! Barça can boast the current Balon d’Or, generally believed to be the best footballer on the planet. They also have one of the top scorers from the last World Cup. And Pedro made history last season by scoring in six different official competitions. Messi has scored 7 goals in different competitions this year, the Spanish Super Cup against Sevilla; plus League goals against Racing and Atletico Madrid and two more in the Champions Legue against Panathinaikos. David Villa opened his Barça account in Santander, added another in the Champions League versus Panathinaikos and sealed the three points at home to Sporting. Pedro started scoring in the Champions League match. Between them, Messi, Villa and Pedro have scored 11 of their team’s 21 goals.

Midfield

2010-08-29_PARTIDO_07.JPGBut these players are supported by some quality midfielders. All three goals in Bilbo came from players playing in this part of the pitch, namely Keita, Xavi and Busquets. Iniesta has also been on target this season with a long range effort at the Sardinero.

Alves and Piqué as well

2010-09-19_PARTIDO_WEB_11.JPGThe Brzilian was thrilled to find the back of the net in Barça’s first Champions League outing, getting the equaliser against Panathinaikos. Alves had not scored since a January trip to Valladolid. Piqué is a defender, but also has a striker’s instinct. He scored a typical centre forward’s goal from a corner taken at the Calderón.

19 different scorers

Since the summer of 2008 Guardiola has used 30 players in his first team, and 19 of these have scored at least once. Messi hs the highest tally with 92, followed by Eto’o with 36 goals and Thierry Henry with 30. But there are players like Maxwell, Milito and Abidal (plus new arrivals Adriano and Mascherano) who have never scored for the club.

Zubi: “we have to show our class”

www.fcbarcelona.cat

Andoni Zubizarreta believes that the experience of last year’s games with Rubin Kazan: “has taught us a number of things – we need to show our class and you’ve got to win the three points out on the pitch in the Champions League”.

Before flying out to Kazan with the squad, Andoni Zubizarreta spoke to the media at the El Prat airport and after last year’s draw in Russia and the defeat at the Nou Camp, he insisted: “we have to respect our rivals, whatever their names are”.

Learning from experience
2009-11-04_WEB_19.JPGAccording to “Zubi”: “Rubin surprised us at home last season and that really set up the group. The meteorological conditions and the difficulty of the rival made it a very complicated task when we went over to Kazan, but this season we are going after having played the first game and the time of the year means that the climate will be more benign. I’m sure we will find difficulties on the pitch all the same”.

Centred on themselves
Reporters asked Zubi about how he felt the league was going so far and how he reckons Real Madrid are doing: “the only thing we have to focus on throughout the season is what we do ourselves. That is our maximum concern. I’m happy with how things have gone, apart from the Hercules game. We’re growing into our style of play, which is our point of reference”.

Valdés equals Zubi and Ramallets

Sandra Sarmiento

Victor Valdes played his 268th league game against Bilbao last Saturday and equalled the record of 177 wins held by Andoni Zubizarreta and Antoni Ramallets.

Víctor Valdés laid stake to a place in the history of the club some time ago and he is the keeper who has played the third highest number of games in goal for Barça- The win in Bilbao meant that he equalled the record of 177 wins held by Andoni Zubizarreta and Antoni Ramallets.

Eight years of saves
WEB_PARTIDO_06.JPGValdés, who made his debut under Louis van Gaal eight years ago on September 11th 2002 against Atletico Madrid, has made innumerable great stops to save the team over the last few years and averages 0.84 goals conceded per game in a 269 game run that has seen just 36 defeats.

“The Maracanà Cat

RAMALLETS.jpgThat was how Antoni Ramallets, who thrilled the Brazilian fans with some astonishing saves in the 1950 World Cup, was nicknamed. Ramallets was the keeper in the team of the 5 Cups, played 288 league games and enjoyed 177 victories, 47 draws and 64 defeats. Ramallets, who played for Barça from 1947 till 196, conceded 358 goals – averaging 1.24 a game.

Zubi, 301 games
ZUBIZARRETAjugant.JPGThe “Dream Team” keeper was part of the club’s first European Cup winning team and is the keeper who’s played most league games for the club, winning his 177, losing 55 and drawing 69, conceding 273 goals -an average of 0.91 a game.

Rosell heads Barça trip to Russia

www.fcbarcelona.cat

Club President Sandro Rosell is travelling with the squad to Kazan - his first trip with the team since taking over earlier this year.

The party also includes vice-president Carles Vilarrubí and board members Jordi Moix, Eduard Coll, Javier Bordas, Silvio Elías and Josep Ramon Vidal Abarca. Sporting Director Andoni Zubizarreta, Head of External Relations Manel Estiarte, Footballing Director Raül Sanllehí and head of relations with UEFA Amador Bernabéu also make the trip.

13.20 flight

2010-09-27_VIAJE_KAZAN_06.JPGThe squad left the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper -where they trained this morning - at 12.15 and caught a 13.20 flight to Kazan. The flight will take five and a half hours and the players will be taken straight to their hotel on arrival.

Pleasant temperature
Most of the squad are repeating the trip they made last year to Kazan, but in contrast to last season when the game was played in early November and the players had to deal with a temperature change of 22º in Barcelona and -5º in Kazan, today’s forecast for Kazan is a maximum of 17º and a minimum of 11º.

Messi and Abidal make Kazan trip

www.fcbarcelona.cat

Although he has not yet received the medical okay to play, Leo Messi joins Eric Abidal in the squad that travels to Russia for the game against Rubin on Wednesday. The injured Adriano is the only first team squad player to miss the trip.

After training normally with the rest of the squad this morning at the Ciutat Esportiva, Leo Messi was called into the squad for the Champions League trip, even though the medical staff have not yet given him the all clear to play following his injury at the Vicente Calderon. Eric Abidal is also back and Thiago Alcántara repeats his call up for the Bilbao game, whilst Adriano misses the trip.

Barça tame the lions (1-3)

Jordi Clos

Barça have picked up a tremendous win away to Athletic Bilbao, who played the second half with ten men. Barça commanded from start to finish and won thanks to goals from Keita, Xavi and Busquets. Villa was sent off in the 86th minute.
Winning at such a famous stadium as the cathedral of San Mamés is always an occasion to savour. Without the injured Messi, Barça had to produce their very best to win three difficult points, but it was definitely the best side that won. With Amorebieta red carded at the end of the first half, FCB made their numerical superiority count, and Keita soon opened the scoring. Xavi stretched that lead, but in the hectic final minutes, Villa was sent off and Bilbao pulled one back before Busquets secured the three points.

Villa hits post

It never has been and never will be easy to win in Bilbao, and this was a classic encounter, with end-to-end football in the pouring rain. But the weather took away none of Barça’s inspiration, and neither did the lack of space offered to them, and they produced the combination game in the centre of the park that was occasionally missing against Sporting. Home stopper Iraizoz warmed his gloves with an 11th minute save from Keita and two minutes later Villa struck the post after an outstanding assist from Iniesta (min 13).

Basques down to ten

This was an evident clash of concepts. Athletic played a vertical game, and were strong in the air, but couldn’t find a way past the imperial Piqué and Puyol. Barça, meanwhile, stuck to their passing game and looked as composed as ever, a situation that would be intensified in the 34th minute when Amorebieta was shown red for a nasty and quite unnecessary tackle on Iniesta. The home fans were enraged by what seemed a fairly good call by the referee, while FCB used the additional space to start moving into danger areas with more decision. But it was still scoreless at the break.

Keita scores
With the damp conditions even worse in the second half, and the home fans even more vociferous than before, the Lions came close when Javi Martínez saw his 49th minute effort hit the woodwork. But most of the action was heading in the other direction. With Barça conducted down the wings by Iniesta and Pedro, it was just a matter of time before the visitors scored and that happened when Villa sent a magnificent pass the way of Keita, who slotted the ball home past Iraizoz (min 55). Moments later Pedro could have made it two, but the Bilbao keeper was there to save the day … for the time being.

Xavi kills the game

Barça were quite happy playing their waiting game, and this was causing more and more frustration for Athletic Club, and tiredness started setting in. The extra man was telling, and Alves was able to play more as a midfielder than a full back, while Iniesta hit the post and Villa was causing danger all over the shop. Finally, it was Xavi in the 72nd minute who did the inevitable and made it 2-0 from the edge of the area.

It looked like it was all over, but there was more to come when Villa was sent off with four minutes to go and then Gabilondo scored in the 89th minute to make it 2-1. It was an unsettling moment for Barça, but that is all it was, a moment, because the brilliant Busquets then finished off a Pedro counter attack with a cheeky chip to put the game beyond the reach of the despairing Basques. They may call Bilbao the Lions, but Barcelona tamed them tonight.

Guardiola: "San Mamés is always tough"

Roger Bogunyà

Pep Guardiola is well aware that his FC Barcelona will face a stern test on the pitch and have to be ready for the noise that the fans inside San Mamés will also generate in a bid to disturb the visitors on Saturday evening.

The Blaugrana take on Athletic Club de Bilbao in a game that ended 1-1 last term and the Catalan coach knows that his players will have to be at their best to claim all three points this time around. "If they dominate us with their play then they will beat us," he said of Athletic. "They are a strong side. It does not matter if you have a lot of tall players or not in San Mamés because they dominate anyway."

Bouncing back
2010-09-24_ENTRENO_18.JPG"They know how to play well using direct tactics, but they also know how to battle when required like they did against Sporting," Guardiola continued. Last weekend Athletic came from two goals behind to earn a point in a 2-2 draw.

Good form
2010-09-24_ENTRENO_39.JPGOn Wednesday Barça did not have an easy outing. "If Sporting played well at the back then we needed to improve going forward," Guardiola said. "But we are doing well. There is always debate about how things are done after every game. Against Panathinaikos and Atlético de Madrid we were in good form and we did not do so well against Sporting. The team is fine and we are competing well."

Athletic praise
Guardiola then praised Athletic for sticking to their regime of only choosing players associated to the Basque Country. "Athletic have a smaller market in whcih to work in than us and they are an example of how to do things well," he commented. "This year two or three more players have come up and have been very good."

Thiago included in squad

www.fcbarcelona.cat

Thiago Alcántara has been called up to the FC Barcelona squad for the game against Athletic Club de Bilbao on Saturday evening as Lionel Messi and Éric Abidal miss out.

The B team starlet is included by Pep Guardiola in the list that the coach revealed after training on Friday. Having spent the day before warming down from the Sporting game, the focus turned to Athletic the day before the trip to the Basque Country.

18 players

2010-09-24_ENTRENO_32.JPGMessi worked on recovering from his injury at the side of the pitch as the players were put through their paces. Along with 17 first-team player Alcántara stepped up from the B squad and impressed enough to be named in the squad for the game in San Mamés.

Abidal has been given permission by the club to be away for family reasons and he will miss Saturday's match.

Athletic timetable

Rosell hands out gold badges

Míriam Nadal / Anna Segura

Sandro Rosell has presented gold club crest for the first time in his role as FC Barcelona president as he spent Friday with 189 members who were celebrating being associated with the Blaugrana for 50 years.

On the day of Mercé and the 53rd birthday of Camp Nou it was the stadium that took centre stage for various events and one of the most emotional moments came in the Sala Paris. At 11.30am the 189 members received their gold club crest from Rosell.

Very excited
2010-09-24_INSIGNIAS_50_AxOS_008.jpgIt was the Rosell's first official act since he took over as president in July and he was accompanied by vice president of the social area Jordi Cardoner. The president revealed that he was very "excited" when handing over the badges as the club showed their thanks for the fans' support over the past half-century.

Gold crests
2010-09-24_INSIGNIAS_50_AxOS_001.jpgDuring the ceremony, which was compeered by Camp Nou announcer Manel Vich, Rosell made a dedication to the supporters who received the gold crests. "It is a very special day and I want to dedicate a great round of applause to you for the 50 years that you have been a part of our club," he said.

"They say that to enjoy the good times you have to also experience the bad, but I think that there are three things that are great whatever comes. The first is maturity, the second is to have grandchildren and the third is to be a member of Barça," he added. "I am envious of club members who have been associated to the club for 50 years."

Physio thanks
2010-09-24_INSIGNIAS_50_AxOS_005.jpgAmong the 189 members to receive the crests was the man who was the football first-team's physiotherapist for over 30 years. Angel Mur is a well-known face around the club and Rosell included him in his speech and was given a warm ovation by all present.

Messi steps up recovery regime

www.fcbarcelona.cat

Lionel Messi's road to recovery took a step forward on Friday as he strolled onto the training pitch for the first time to work on his individual programme.

2010-09-24_ENTRENO_11.JPGThe Argentinian star suffered his injury in the closing moments of Barça's win against Atlético de Madrid last weekend and has spent the last few days behind closed doors. Now he has moved up a gear and moved outside along with a coach and worked away from the rest of the first-team squad as he battles to regain full fitness.

Two games
2010-09-24_ENTRENO_14.JPGMessi is combining the training that he is doing on the pitch with an intense regime in the Blaugrana gymnasium at the Ciutat Esportiva complex. After he had completed his exercises on Friday he stayed out and watched the other players go through their warm-up exercises and ball games.

Medics predicted after the initial round of tests that Messi would miss two games for pep Guardiola's side and has already sat out the midweek encounter with Sporting Gijón.

Milito not fazed by defensive opponents

Vanessa Forns

Gaby Milito has said that the team is used to playing defensive sides like Sporting were on Tuesday night. He claims that the squad has the right resources to cope with such situations.

The Barça centre back appreciates that teams that visit the Camp Nou prefer to turn games into damage limitation exercises, saying that “over the last two years, just about every team we have faced has played like that … but until now we have managed to get through such games without too many problems”.

Team with resources
So, Milito believes FC Barcelona are quite used to such problems, adding that the team “has lots of solutions and lots of resources to deal with these difficulties … but looking ahead, it’s clear that we’ll have to find new ways of dealing with the problems that other teams cause us”.

Team not individuals
There is no doubt that the absence of the injured Messi against Sporting was a talking point. But the Argentinian denied that they had changed their game plan to cover for him. “We are a squad, a group, with very good players, if at any point in the season somebody is missing, we have someone else to take his place.”

No worries for Messi
2010-09-23_ENTRENO_38.JPGBut even though the “group block is more important than any individuals” Milito did admit that his compatriot is “unique and unreplaceable”. He added that Messi’s injury “is healing very well … he’s calm and relaxed, just letting time pass and keen to get back to helping the team”.

Adaptation of Mascherano
Milito, who has fully recovered from the injury that sidelined him for so long, also spoke about the squad’s other Argentine international, Javier Mascherano: “He’s doing well, he has adapted very quickly and is settling in. I don’t think he’ll find it hard to adapt because he’s such a capable footballer. I know how intelligent he is. I know how versatile he is. He’s picking up the concepts Pep’s explaining to him very well.”

Game at San Mamés
Finally, Milito had the following to say about Saturday’s trip to Bilbao: “We’ll have to be prepared for a very serious match, because we’re up against a very good team. It’s one of the toughest grounds in Spanish football. We’ll have to play the same way we have done in other games recently, playing seriously and intensely, because we won’t be playing an easy team.”

Messi’s Golden Boot in the Museum

www.fcbarcelona.cat

This Thursday the FC Barcelona Museum will put on display the Golden Boot that will be officially presented to Lionel Messi on September 30, and which accredits him as the top goalscorer in Europe for the 2009/10 season.

A delegation from the magazine ‘Don Balón’, led by Rogelio Rengel, who is in charge of the international editions, visited the FC Barcelona Museum on Thursday morning. The Golden Boot was deposited in a specially structured space, the editor of ‘Don Balón’ and the director of the Museum, Jordi Penas. Messi will be officially presented with the award at a ceremony on September 30 at 19.15 in the old Estrella Damm factory in Barcelona.

On display for a week
2009-09-22_PARTIDO_21.JPGThe original trophy that will be received by the Argentinian star for topping the continent’s goalscoring charts in the 2009/10 season will be on show for a week on the first floor of the Museum, and all visitors will be able to see it in person and have their photographs taken with it. The golden trophy will be in a cabinet just in front of a huge display showing Messi’s picture and a list of the 34 goals that the Barça number 10 scored last season.

Villa sees off Sporting (1-0)

Jordi Clos
Barça went for efficiency over spectacle tonight and beat Sporting 1-0 thanks to a second half David Villa strike. This was a Barça who showed a lot of strength at the back, but were definitely less inspired than usual up front.
Barça got through their first game without the injured Leo Messi with a narrow win over a dangerous looking Sporting. After a promising start in which the new look diamond midfield were well on top, Sporting managed to neutralise Barça’s game and it took an improved second half performance and Villa’s goal to ensure the points.

Iniesta in Messi role

Guardiola started with a 4-4-2 formation with Busquets as the defensive point of a midfield diamond, which had Keita and Xavi in the middle and Iniesta as the most advanced member. Iniesta was charged with helping the fans forget Messi’s absence and he nearly made a great impact on 9 minutes with a similar chance to his World Cup winning strike, but this time the keeper, Cuellar, was sharper than Holland’s Stekelenburg and managed to turn it round for a corner.

Change in formation

Although the diamond midfield seemed to work early on, as Barça dominated, Sporting gradually began to get a grip on the game and cut their hosts’ attacking options which were lacking width somewhat throughout. Villa got through the defence and shot wide just past the half hour, but Guardiola could see his formation wasn’t firing on all cylinders and soon decided to switch to a more familiar 4-3-3 set up, which helped to sharpen the game up.

Villa on hand

Piqué and Pedro brought more movement to the team after the break and Alves put Villa through to break the Sporting off side trap on 49 minutes for the Spanish striker to pounce and open the scoring. Now the Barça team was beginning to click and the fans’ nerves began to settle. Sporting were forced to push forward and Barça began to find more space as Preciado, who threw on a number of his first choice players who’d been left on the bench, urged his team to attack.

Strong defence

It was time to close the game down and Barça showed that they could also defend when necessary and the efficiency of the defence that Sporting failed to get a single shot on target during the 90 minutes. Villa had struck and for tonight at least, that was enough.

Villa: “it was a tough game”

www.fcbarcelona.cat

David Villa enjoyed his first home league win and his first league goal at the Nou Camp on Wednesday night against his boyhood team Sporting and he was quick to complement them on their performance: “it was a tough game. They closed down well and it

Villa also reckoned that many teams would come along to the Nou Camp this season with the same plan – sitting back and inviting Barça to come at them.

The Spanish striker insisted: “I’ve felt no pressure to get goals. The important thing is to get chances – when they don’t come along it is time to worry”. Villa also expressed his hope that: “Messi will be trying to get back as soon as possible”, whilst insisting, “the squad is strong enough to make up for his absence”.

Below are some of the players’ post match comments

Alves
2010-09-22_partido_03.JPG“We found it hard to find spaces throughout the game, but we found more after the break when we played better and made more chances, including the goal”.

“There’s no time to rest and the league demands a really high rhythm. Despite all these games, we hope to be up to the level expected of us at the San Mames”.

Pedro
“It was a difficult game for us, but the important thing is that we took the three points”.

Iniesta
“We are on a good run, both in terms of our performances and our attitude. We were just short of that second goal to take the pressure off a bit, but we showed we can find the answers when things get complicated”.

“There are no easy games. The team have again stood up to be counted and made their chances”

“In all the positions I played in the game, I knew what my job was and I tried to do what was asked of me at each moment”.

“You can’t always produce excellence”

Vanessa Forns

Although he admitted that the team had lacked spark at times against Sporting, Guardiola stressed; “you can’t always produce excellence. The team stuck together and we played at a high level”.

It was a victory built on hard work and the boss insisted: “we played at a high level. We lacked spark, but we kept together. They didn’t have a single shot on target and that is an added plus for us. If we defend well, it’s because we attack well and vice versa. The team stuck together and we didn’t split into attack and defence. You have to take into account that the other team played too and they played very well”.

Sporting
The boss was full of praise for Sporting’s tactics, explaining: “Sporting played an extraordinary game in defence. When teams sit back and invite you to come at them, you have to go after them and maybe we were missing that ability to go for their second line of midfielders. We came out better after the break, but teams like that are always tough to break down”.

“Solid”
2010-09-22_partido_17.JPG“Sporting are a solid team. They’ve always been a lively outfit who believed they belong in the top flight. Now they have made some good signings – people who know their job on the pitch. El Molinón has a lot of charisma and great fans. They are a team who have plenty of good points. They area finished object and they play really well”.

Villa
David Villa was one of the game’s main protagonists with his second half winner and Guardiola reckons: “he gives us a little extra, both as a striker and playing wide and coming into the centre. He widens the pitch for us and we all know he’s a great finisher”.

Barça B
Finally, Guardiola was asked about the great start to the season Barça B have made in the second division and he insisted: “it’s come as no surprise to me, they have a great coach and staff, as well as a group of players with a great future ahead of them. They have a long road ahead of them and I know Luis Enrique won’t let them sit back. They are a generation who have made the club a lot stronger by making it up into the second division”.

Barça draw Ceuta in the Cup

www.fcbarcelona.cat

Barça have been drawn against Second B club Ceuta in the R32 of the Kings Cup. The first leg will be in Ceuta and the return leg in the Camp Nou.

Wednesday’s draw was organized so that all the teams taking part in European competitions would be paired with clubs from the Spanish Second B (the third level).

Previous Cup meetings

The last time the two sides met in the Cup was in the 2000-2001 season, when Barça eliminated Ceuta 3-0 in a one leg tie in the third round, the goals coming from Alfonso Perez and Kluivert.

Almost 60 years earlier, in the 1942-43 season, Barça beat Ceuta in a two-leg quarterfinal, winning 5-2 in the old Les Corts stadium and then 2-4 in Ceuta.

A shaky start

Ceuta have started their league campaign in Group 4 of Second B in inconsistent form, winning one, drawing two and losing two. They’ve scored four goals and conceded two. Last weekend they drew 1-1 away to Alcalá. They’re managed by the former Cape Verde national team manager Joao Carlos Pires de Deus.

Along the way to the R32 clash with FC Barcelona, Ceuta have eliminated Mancha Real (4-1), Guadalajara (2-1) and Melilla (2-2), on penalties.

No Messi, but morale high

Roger Bogunyà

Barça go into their second of this week’s three La Liga games against Sporting at the Nou Camp this evening(20.00 R@dio Barca)without the injured Leo Messi, but with their morale high and a determination to build on Sunday’s great performance.
After the slip up against Hercules, tonight represents Barça’s chance to chalk up their first home win of the season in La Liga and although they will have to make do without Leo Messi who Guardiola reckons is “ virtually irreplaceable”, the boss went on to sum up the attitude the team will take –“we’ll get by without him” and with the wealth of attacking talent at his service there can be no doubt that Guardiola will send out a team determined to treat the fans to another night of thrilling positive football.

TEAM NEWS

2010-09-14_FCB_-_PANATHINAIKOS_027.jpgApatr from the missing Messi, Barça will again be without Abidal following a family bereavement, but Guardiola can call on Jeffren who is recovered from injury. Should he play, Piqué will make his 100th appearance for the team after just two years and two months back at the club. Preciado has suffered late injuries to Novo and Carmelo and he may also introduce rotations with number one keeper Juan Pablo rested and Gregory, Sangoy and Canella all missing the trip as their boss looks to maximise the points from this game and the match against Valencia next weekend.

HISTORY

Sporting’s two visits to the Nou Camp since they were promoted two seasons ago both ended with wins for Barça: 3-0 in the opening game of last season, with goals from Bojan, Keita and Ibra in a game that Messi also missed, and 3-1 the previous year thanks to two strikes from Eto’o and a third from Dani Alves.

FORM GUIDE

2010-09-14_PARTIDO_13.JPGBarça bounced back from the defeat to Hercules with a magisterial performance against Atletico Madrid, after handing Panathinaikos a drubbing in the Champions League last Tuesday. Barça are currently in sixth place with six points, three behind leaders Valencia and have scored five goals and concede three. Sporting are lying 12th after starting the season with a heavy defeat at Atletico Madrid, beating Mallorca 2-0 and drawing 2-2 with Bilbao at the weekend.

ONES TO WATCH
Sporting boss Manolo Preciado and Barça’s Pep Guardiola have a good relationship and Pep claimed he had: ”a lot of respect and affection” for Preciado in his pre-match press conference, whilst the Sporting manager expressed his disappointment at Messi’s injury: “he’s done things on the pitch I’ve never seen anybody do before”. David Villa is also a big fan of Preciado’s, stating: “they should build a monument to him”, a compliment returned by Preciado who reckons: “David is the real phenomena!”.

“He’s virtually irreplaceable, but we’ll get by without him”

Aida Soriano

Josep Guardiola was optimistic about tomorrow’s game against Sporting and although his team will have to make do without the injured Leo Messi, he insisted: “he’s virtually irreplaceable, but we’ll get by without him”.

Guardiola commented: “Messi has some special abilities. Fortunately he’ll be okay in a short time . He’s a strong lad and his bones and ligaments have held up. We’ll hope to have him back in two or three weeks”.

“He’ll be back when he’s ready”

2010-09-19_PARTIDO_WEB_14.JPGDespite his optimism, Guardiola also warned: “he’ll come back when he’s ready. It’s an injury that can have a number of after effects – if we don’t get him fully cured, it’s something he could carry with him for a while. I don’t know if he’ll be alright for the Rubin Kazan game, he’ll just have to rest till he’s okay again. We’ve not put a date on his return and he understands that perfectly well and I repeat, when he’s alright, he’ll come back”.

Sporting

Wednesday will be the first game Messi misses, but Guardiola assured reporters: “we’ll look for a way to continue attacking and defend even better. Sporting have had the same manager for some time and that’s a plus. They’ve established themselves in the top flight. They can get to you with two or three quick passes and look to get forward with two or three players really quickly. They are aggressive in that they go and look for goals”.

Guardiola claimed to have: “a lot of affection and respect” for the Sporting boss Manuel Preciado, and reckons that to beat his team” we’ll have to know all about them and see where we can create problems for them and how we can stop them troubling us”.

“Our strength is on the pitch”

2010-09-21_ENTRENO_01.JPGGuardiola also insisted on distancing himself from the recent media rows, claiming: “our strength is on the pitch. The only thing we have to do is try and get better and to keep on winning games. We played really well against Atletico and there haven’t been many such complete games. We’ve had two very good games, but now we have to keep that up - something I’m convinced we can do”.

Guardiola was also quizzed as to changes in Barça’s style, but he countered: “we don’t do anything special; it’s just that we are getting to know each other better. We adapt the qualities, but the basic ideal is the same. We try to adapt certain aspects to the strengths of our players and we try and make them adapt too, so that they feel comfortable”.

Iniesta’s impending fatherhood
Guardiola also had words of congratulations for Andres Iniesta on the news of his upcoming fatherhood: “the important thing is that he and his wife are very happy and that their future child is okay. Getting Andrés back is the best signing of the season. He’s very happy and I hope that this happy event will make him even better and able to get back to his level”.

The boss also spoke of another World Cup winner, Sergio Busquets, explaining: “it’s his third year in the team now and he’s become a regular. He’s a stable player with a very strong character. It’s good for the squad that there is a new generation like him coming through”.

Villa and Mascherano
2010-09-21_ENTRENO_47.JPGAs to his new signings, Guardiola was adamant: “Mascherano has adapted perfectly – we didn’t lose to Hercules because of him or Adriano. We’ll get nowhere with that type of analysis. Both of them are a great help, both off and on the pitch”. David Villa: “will get the goal. He’s scored wherever he’s played and the goals will come for us too”. Guardiola closed with the only negative note, concerning Abidal: “his grandfather has died and the funeral is today or tomorrow. He’ll come back when that is over”.

Barça to play league game number 2,500

Vanessa Forns / Manel Tomàs

Barça will play their 2500th league game this Wednesday when Sporting visit the Nou Camp.

Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid, the only other clubs to have been ever present in the Spanish top flight since its inception in the1928/29 season, will also both reach that number when they play on Tuesday.

Since that first league season began at the Sardinero on February 12th 1929, Barça have had their ups and downs over the last 80 years, wining the inaugural championship at the end of the golden era at the club (1919-29), they then slipped into a long and profound crisis which was to last through the thirties and into the post-war years.

Tough times
EQUIP_1936-37_x2x.jpgDurant that period, Barça hit rock bottom in the 22/34 season when they finished next to bottom and were saved the ignominy of relegation because of the expansion of the league from 10 to 12 teams and no teams went down that season. In 1937 during the Civil War, Barça won the Mediterranean League, a competition which was later annulled and whose games are not officially counted. Following the end of the Civil War, La Liga restarted and in 1941/42, the team finished 12th and had to win a playoff to stay in the top flight, something they did by beating Murcia 5-1.

10 titles in 60 years
With Josep Samitier as coach, Barça won their first league title for 16 years in the 44/45 season and went on to take six more league titles over the next 16 years to become a reference point in the Spanish game. The sixties were the start of another bad period however and the club won just two more title before 1990. The boosts given by the signing of Johan Cruyff as a player in 1973 and the arrival of Terry Venables in 1984 proved to be ephemeral and as 1990 began, the club could only boast 10 league titles in the previous 60 years.

Turning point
EUFORIA_LLIGA_93-94.jpgThe 1990/91 season was to mark a turning point and the birth of the first “Dream Team”, as the club became identified with a freewheeling, attacking and entertaining style of play that helped them throw off the stigma of underachievers they’d been labelled with since the sixties. Over the next 20 years the team won 10 league titles – something it had taken the club the previous 60 to achieve. The winning mentality has reached its peak with Josep Guardiola in the manager’s seat as the team has enjoyed unprecedented success and prestige.

Guardiola takes team to new highs
2010-08-21_PARTIDO_13.JPGThe winning mentality has reached its peak with Josep Guardiola in the manager’s seat as the team has enjoyed unprecedented success and prestige. A look at the stats shows just how successful Guardiola’s team has been: of the 2,500 games played since the league began, 55% - 1379 – ended in victory for Barca. Since Pep has been in charge, the team has won 60 of its 79 league games, representing 76%.

Jeffren given medical OK

www.fcbarcelona.cat

Barça trained with 19 players this morning, as B team players Nolito and Thiago joined the first team squad, still without Abidal and Messi. Jeffren was given the medical all clear after the training session and will be available for the next game.

The players are centred on Wednesday’s league clash with Sporting and with the busy schedule of games ahead, Guardiola dealt with tactics in this morning’s session, as well as some physical work.

Messi starts treatment

Leo Messi continued in the physio room receiving treatment on his damaged ankle, whilst Eric Abidal is still away on family business.

Villa’s special game

Jesús Carrillo

As an Asturian native and a lifelong Sporting fan, it’s always a bitter sweet feeling for David Villa when he scores against the Gijon team. This Wednesday he’s got the chance to beat Sporting at home for the first time in his career.

With Sporting having spent much of his career in the second division, David Villa has only come up against them four times and he’s scored against them four times.

No celebrations

Villa doesn’t normally celebrate his goals against Sporting and when he played against them for Valencia he failed to come away with a win on both occasions the Gijon team visited Mestalla, whilst he won once and drew the other time he visited El Molinon.

Two penalties

villa1_x3x.jpgVilla has scored in three of the four games he’s faced Sporting – twice from the penalty spot. On Sporting’s first visit to the Mestalla after promotion, they won 2-3, a result reversed in the game at El Molinon and Villa scored penalties in both games.

Two draws last season

Last season the teams drew both games -2-2 in Valencia with Villa getting both goals and a goalless draw in Gijon, the only game that the Spanish striker failed to score against his favourite team.

Villa: “The tackle on Messi was brutal”

Anna Segura

After watching the video of the foul by Ujfalusi on Leo Messi, David Villa reckons it was “brutal”, but also believes the Atletico Madrid man: “didn’t go into the tackle to hurt”.

Messi’s injury was a talking point at the press conference held after training this morning and whilst lamenting the loss of the Argentinean for the next couple of games, Villa insisted: “the rest of the squad is capable of making sure we don’t notice his absence”.

“Messi is better”
2010-09-20_ENTRENO_30.JPGAfter tests showed the injury to Messi wasn’t as serious as first feared, Villa commented: “we are lucky if he’s only going to be out for 10 days. Even so we’d like him to be still here as he’s a vital player for the team”. The Spanish striker also explained that he’d seen Messi this morning and: “he was better – he wasn’t in such pain and he was more confident about coming back”.

Extra motivation
2010-09-19_PARTIDO_WEB_12.JPGReflecting on Sunday’s result, Villa said: “every game is just three points, but it’s also important who you beat and where. It has been three years without a win there for Barça and the win gives us an extra motivation”.

Three points the most important thing
Villa had his chances to get on the score sheet on Sunday and he believes: “if I’d been a bit more accurate or De Gea hadn’t been in such fine form, we could have won by more. The important thing though, is that the team won and took the points”.

Messi definitely out for at least two games

www.fcbarcelona.cat

After an MRI taken this morning at the Hospital de Barcelona, doctors have concluded that Leo Messi has a sprain in the internal and external ligaments of his right ankle, but confirmed that there is no damage to the bones.

Leo Messi will definitely miss the matches against Sporting and Bilbao this week after doctors confirmed their earlier diagnosis following the nasty foul he received from Ujfalusi on Sunday. His availability after these two games will depend on how he recovers from the injury.

Muscle injuries
fcb-chelsea-messi.jpgLeo Messi has suffered a number of injuries in his six years with the first team. One of his first occurred in the 2005-06 Champions League game against Chelsea, when he suffered a muscle injury that put him out of the final part of the season, as Rijkaard’s team went on to win their Champions League and La Liga double.

Two years later in another Champions League tie, this time against Celtic, Messi suffered a similar injury which put him out for six weeks. That season he’d also been injured in a game against Valencia in Mestalla, which saw him sat on the sidelines for just over a month.

Broken metatarsal

Maybe his most serious injury came in the game against Zaragoza in November 2006 when he fractured a metatarsal bone in his left foot, which put him out for three months.

Alves wary of Barça criticism

Anna Segura

Dani Alves believes that critics of FC Barcelona should remember the start to the 2008/09 campaign when the team started slowly and were given a bad press only to go on and win the treble.

The Blaugrana full-back was reacting to the defeat by Hércules and thinks that the similarities between this year and two seasons ago are valid. "There is no need to become angry or to despair," he explained after training on Sunday morning. "It is not how you start a season, but how you finish one. We were criticised a lot during the club's most successful ever yea but we went on to finish very well."

Bad day
2010-09-12_ENTRENO_17.JPGReflecting on the Saturday reverse against Hércules the Brazilian recognised that things did not go well. "We had a bad day and when you have a bad day you do not win," he continued. "However, it is better to lose now then to lose in the final straight. I hope we do not drop any more points at home though and that the points that we have now dropped end up costing us. We just have to stay calm and know how to come back."

Euro change
Barça had little time to dwell on their first defeat as the focus has already turned to the Champions League opener against Panathinaikos on Tuesday evening. "We are always motivated in this team," Alves stated. "Only winning counts here and when we do not win we are angry about it. Whoever we play against we are always motivated to win and the game on Tuesday will be no different. We will go out there with the same desire, but we hope that we can be a bit better."

Style council
2010-09-12_ENTRENO_23.JPGOn the philosophy employed by the Blaugrana there should be not thought of trying to change in order to beat teams that play with a more basic style, Alves believes. "We have our own way of doing things and we do not think about changing," he explained. "If we can win by three or more goals then we will do that. It is not only about scoring though, it is about adding points, although here we play to win and entertain.. That is our philosophy and it will not change. It is a philosophy that has done us a lot of good."

Xavi: “We have a great team”

David Puig

Xavi Hernández is promising big things this season. The midfielder knows they have the strength in depths to deal with the challenges ahead, which start with Hercules on Saturday.

Xavi Hernández is confident in Barça’s chances, saying that “we have a good team. No, we have a great team. Every day I sense we are working well. We support each other on and off the field and with a bit of luck, we can do some big things this season”.

19+25
He doesn’t agree that they are going into the season with limited resources. Xavi supports the “Guardiola way. In the squad we are 19+25, the first team players and the reserves, who are all top quality.” He also senses the players are already there to lead the next generation after Andrés Iniesta and himself, namely “Sergi Roberto, Oriol Romeu, Jonathan dos Santos and Thiago Alcántara. We can feel very safe with them”.

Concern about Hercules
2010-09-09_RP_XAVI_009.jpgXavi also spoke about the imminent visit of Esteban Vigo’s side. “It the classic kind of game that can get difficult for us, Hercules will be especially motivated. If we sit back, we’ll get into trouble. There’s fun ahead, with six games in 18 days. We’ll need to charge the batteries”.

Messi and Ibrahimovic
Xavi was delighted to see Messi get an ovation at the end of the Argentina game, suggesting that his country’s people are back behind him. “Just one thing has changed: the scores. Messi was great at the World Cup, but Argentina wanted to name scapegoats, and singled him out because he’s the best player in the world”.

As for Ibrahimovic leaving Barça, Xavi said “neither me nor my team mates noticed what was going on. We respect Guardiola and Zlatan too”.

Mònica Ruiz, Museum visitor number 20 million

www.fcbarcelona.cat

A 25 year old girl from Lleida became the 20 millionth visitor to the Barça museum on Thursday. Her name is Mònica Ruiz.

It was just after 12.00 midday when 25 year old Mònica Ruiz from Almenar (Lleida) passed through the ticket offices with a friend and wearing a Xavi shirt. Mònica was welcomed by Javier Faus, economic vice president of the club, and received a giant ticket that credited her as visitor 20 million. The media were there to record the moment for posterity. Said Monica, “it was quite a surprise.” She added that she had no idea that the Museum was expecting history to be made that day and that she felt delighted though a “little crazy with so many emotions”.

El visitant número 1, present
2010-09-09_VISITANTE_20_MILLONES_016.jpgMonica was introduced to Julià Bretos, who on September 24, 1984 became the first ever visitor to the museum. She was there to hand over the first ever ticket to be sold for the FC Barcelona Museum.

Meeting with Sandro Rosell

After receiving the 20 millionth ticket, Monica was given a tour of the stadium and was allowed to walk on the Camp Nou turf, where as a special treat, she was taken into the first team dressing room. Before the visit, president Sandro Rosell came down to meet Mònica and Julià in person and present them with a special commemorative shirt to honour the historic event.

More prizes

2010-09-09_VISITANTE_20_MILLONES_029.jpgBut that was not the end of it. Mònica also got two tickets for the match on Saturday against Hercules and a gift voucher worth 300 euros to spend in the FCBotiga, which was specially opened for Monica to choose the Barça goodies she wanted.

Messi, two new objectives: Hercules and Real

Edgar Fornós

Barça striker Leo Messi has plenty of challenges ahead this season, two of which will be scoring against Hercules and Real Sociedad, the only teams in top flight he has never scored against.

Two of the newly promoted clubs, Hercules and Real Sociedad, will have to be especially careful with Leo Messi, because they are the only sides the Argentine has yet to make one of his victims.

Three new teams last season
Tenerife, Valladolid and Vila-real were the three sides Messi had never sxcored against in La Liga last term, but he bagged a hat trick against the islanders, scored past Valladolid both at the Nuevo Zorrilla and Camp Nou and collected a brace against Vila-at El Madrigal.
Messi on goalscoring form

2010-01-16_FCB_-_SEVILLA_005.jpgLast season Leo Messi set a new personal best with 47 goals, 34 in La Liga. He looks to be going the same way this season, with four in his account already in just two official appearances: the Spanish Super Cup and the league opener against Racing. Messi is also just one goal away from scoring his one hundredth goal with his left foot.

Edmílson: “They are still favourites”

www.fcbarcelona.cat

Former Barça man José Edmílson, now at Zaragoza, thinks Barça has just as good a chance of winning titles this season. Following the three new signings, he reckons “the philosophy is the same as ever”.

On occasion of the friendly between Barça B and Brazil, José Edmílson came to Barcelona to watch the ‘canarinha’ and commentate on the match for Barça TV. The Brazilian spoke about his national side and also the FCB squad, Guardiola and their title hopes this season.

More motivated
Despite winning so much in the last two seasons, Edmílson does not sense any less hunger among the Barça players. “I am sure Barça will be just as motivated with eight world champions among them. I was very pleased. I spent four vey good years with these people”.

The duel with Madrid
2009-11-29_PARTIDO_10.JPGEdmílson predicts that this year “Barça are still favourites along with Madrid”. But he does hope that “the other teams manage to make the league more competitive”, sensing that sides like Sevilla and Atletico Madrid are good enough to pose a decent challenge.

Barça B reflect first team
The Zaragoza star is also impressed with the groundwork being done at Barça. He noticed on Tuesday that in the reserve side “you can see the hand of Pep. They play with widely spaced centre backs, and a goalkeeper who collects the ball well.” He knows these players “need the right mentality about them in case they are needed by the first team, for that way they won’t find it so hard to adapt to their style of play”.
